As technology becomes more intuitive, our homes are getting smarter – making us more secure and more efficient than ever before. Homeowners have thoroughly embraced the smart technology, and we are seeing more and more of these solutions implemented.
- Oversized Kitchens: We used to be content with an eat-in kitchen, but today’s homeowner is looking for an expansive kitchen which is social as well as efficient and functional. Contemporary gourmet kitchens are impressive enough, with wine closets and butler’ pantries; add in double islands to gather around and plenty of space to maneuver, and the kitchen is more of a gathering place than ever before. Large farm style tables often grace these oversize spaces which often completely replace a formal dining room.
- Multiple Kitchens: For some, even an oversized kitchen is not enough. On Longboat Key, full outdoor kitchens capitalize on the year-round beautiful weather, while prep kitchens and spice kitchens are beginning to show up adjacent to the “gathering kitchen” in luxury homes. - Spa-Like Master Baths: Master bathrooms are becoming more and more luxurious. While some homeowner’s choose his and hers master baths, others opt for dual rainfall showerheads instead of a bathtub. Radiant heat floors are all the rage, as are steam features, seats and shelves in the shower.
- Multi-Generational Living: This is one old-school tradition that seems to be making a comeback! We love the trend towards putting multiple generations under one roof. Mother-in-law suites, adjacent apartments, and even freestanding on-property cottages are showing up in residential home construction, allowing grandparents and extended family to enjoy life together. One very popular building trend is the addition of a second master suite downstairs, allowing for older relatives to have their space without climbing stairs. - South Florida “Mud Rooms”: Up north, a place is needed for snow boots, but here in Sarasota, having a room to shed sandy flip-flops and rain-drenched umbrellas is definitely a smart design choice. As many rooms are right off the pool, some opt for a “mud room” to dry off from a swim or leave used towels in a laundry bin; while a space off the garage which allows us to rinse off our feet and change out of beach wear.
