You came up with ideas, worked with general contractors and designers, and built the new custom home of your dreams – and it is beautiful!

Now it is time to put it in its best light – literally. The new trends in lighting design for 2019 are actually primarily classic and retro – but updated for a modern era. Here are some of the most amazing creative lighting looks reimagined for your new home. Turn on the lights, and show off your home.

Lighting sets the mood of any space, and often varies from room to room. For instance, you may want brighter lights in the kitchen, and softer lights in a den or rec room. Your own personal style and the style of your home all come into play when deciding which fixtures you choose for illumination. These are some of the ideas which are trending as we head into the new year.

Creative Lighting Goes Retro

Many of the popular styles of 2019 are more contemporary versions of older, more traditional design. For instance Edison lighting has made a huge comeback this year. Modern Edison light bulbs are made to reproduce the same light color and bulb shape of the popular vintage bulbs. However, they utilize LED filament and are much more energy-efficient than any incandescent lighting. Edison bulbs are retro and a bit industrial, creating a soft light which may require several bulbs to properly illuminate a room. Another nod to the past is mid-century and Art Deco design, which is actually really popular in many homes in this area known as “Sarasota School of Architecture”. Mid-century design is characterized by clean lines and strong geometric shapes. The iconic Sputnick chandelier is a great representation of this style. In its modern counterpart, mid-century reminiscent lighting fixtures are fun and artistic, perfect for a casual space with a fun or creative vibe.

These styles are returning but are more refined, showcasing sleek metals and clean lines.

Illuminating Design Features

One of the most prolific design features as it relates to light fixtures is the new soft gold colors. Matte and brushed metal designs fit in beautifully with the soft modern contemporary hues such as the widely popular grey palettes. Soft gold falls on the spectrum between brushed silver and brushed gold, and allows for the warmth of the room to be reflected. Soft gold fixtures are being utilized in designs from country chic to modern contemporary home design. What is out? Brassy, shiny gold features.

Another trend in creative lighting which many homeowners are adopting is “the bigger, the better”. Oversized pendant lighting is especially prevalent, as are large chandeliers over stairwells and dining room tables. Cathedral and vaulted ceilings have given people the opportunity to fill spacious areas with large fixtures that are eye-catching and bold – without anyone hitting their head on them.

LED lighting, once considered too inconvenient and expensive, is gaining ground and becoming more mainstream. As prices continue to drop, expect to see LED make some real ground. It is, after all, far more energy effective. LED lamps are available in many colors, degrees of brightness, and varied shapes. They are a great choice for unique and distinctive design choices.
