As 2019 comes to a close, we look forward to a new year full of beautiful new builds and custom homes. Because design is ever-evolving, it is not surprising that we are seeing some trends fade away as others step into prominence. Although sometimes these features seem a small change, they can make a huge difference in how we live – whether in beauty, convenience, or cost savings.

Taken from multiple locations around the web, we present to you some of the hottest 2020 must-have features for those looking to build a new home.

Trending 2020 Must-Have Features

  • Statement Appliances: Appliances can be boring and mundane, and often fade into the landscape of the kitchen. But with some of the newer models coming onto the market, you’ll be able to show off your design style in beautiful fashion. From retro-ovens to designer refrigerators, your appliances are ready to make a bold statement.
  • Extended MudRooms: For those who live at the beach or have a pool out back, the mud room is becoming less of an afterthought, and more of a well-deigned space. From foot washing stations to bathrooms and extended storage, these rooms offer the ability to completely rinse off the outdoors before entering your home – some even including showers and robes to do so.
  • Creative Storage: Proactively utilizing every spare corner of your home (while hiding things away) continues to be an obsession of new home owners. So from deep drawers to hide pasta pots, to hidden shoe racks under the stairs, look for things to get more organized. Especially popular are slim baseboard drawers which slide out for books or small toys.
  • Lots of Benches: In keeping with the storage themes, utilizing benches under windows or as an alternative to kitchen chairs allows not only a lot of room to relax, but a lot of room to hide things away. Cushioned benches around the perimeter of rooms also can leave more open space while providing all the comfortable seating you require.
  • Open Walk-In Showers: Let’s face it, keeping the glass shower enclosure clean is a nightmare! So while Roman showers have been popular in the Sarasota area for decades, the new “closet inspired” walk-in shower utilizes any available space (such as a long, narrow area, or a curved wall around a corner) to create a protected and private showering experience. Opt for stone or tile, and throw away the Windex.
  • Heated Countertops or Flooring: You may think that heating your stone or tile surfaces is a waste of money for those of us who live in Longboat Key or other popular Sarasota areas, but hear us out. Especially for those of us who enjoy warm weather year round, winter overnight and morning temps can feel colder than they are – and can make that morning shower a little too brisk. Radiant heat that can be turned on when the weather temporarily cools will keep surfaces warm, without having to crank up the heat in your home. After all, it should be warm again by noon.
  • Sleek but Colorful Kitchens & Baths: The all-white look is nearly played out at this point, but we still love the clean, sleek look it provided. Adding strategic pops of color can make your kitchen or bath come to life style-wise. Try colored upholstery on your kitchen stools, brightly colored small appliances, or floral displays. While the contemporary, minimalist look is still desirable, a bit of colorful whimsy is now the trend. Also big this year? White, navy and brass kitchen designs.
