Top Home Renovation Choices

If you are renovating your home simply to make your own life more enjoyable, the ROI is not necessarily your top concern. After all, sometimes we just want that luxurious spa bathroom, or the deluxe swimming pool in the backyard. But if you are looking for home renovation ideas which will raise your home’s value for resale, here are some of the top choices from the experts.

  • Create an Outdoor Space: Whether you build a new wooden deck, or install a new paver patio, creating a comfortable sitting area outdoors is a popular choice in the Sarasota area. After all, we spend much of our lives outside, and our lanais are often an extension of our living space. Adding beautiful landscaping, a water feature such as a fountain, or a sunshade will make it extra special.
  • Garage or Shed Renovations: Most Florida homes do not have basements, and have limited attic space. This makes storage space a premium option, and our garages become the default storage area (With no room for cars). Building a garage extension – or large shed to allow you to clean out your garage – is an exceptionally attractive option for new homebuyers. Making these structures “under air” if possible is also considered a great option.
  • Update Your Flooring: From dated linoleum to stained carpet, nothing will make a room look more tired than worn-out flooring. Real hardwood flooring is especially popular, as is bamboo. However, newer innovations in tile and even linoleum allow for a wood look without the cost and upkeep requirements. Wood or tile is a classic choice not likely to go out of style, and both can dramatically change the look of any room.
  • Hurricane Feature Improvements: While zoning codes have required certain codes for new construction, some older homes may yet include older windows and doors. Updating your windows and glass doors to the latest hurricane code, installing hurricane shutters or roll-down coverings, and changing out your garage door to a hurricane-protected product will not only protect you from major storms, they will save you quite a bit on home insurance – a great point for resale.
  • Let the Light In: Home buyers in 2020 are interested in natural light, and lots of it. Open up dark rooms with larger windows or skylights, and change out heavy drapes or curtains with roll-down UV blinds. Replacing old lighting fixtures with more innovative products which shed more natural light and illuminate dark corners is also a great way to light up your home – think pendant and track lighting options.
  • Be Smart: More and more homeowners are interested in living in smart homes, so adding smart home features puts you ahead of the game. Smart thermostats, door locks and light bulbs will help your home to compete in a tight market.

It’s also important to note that some home renovation staples are actually not great returns on investment. Large scale kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, and the addition of swimming pools typically will not return your invested money. Still, if you plan on living in the home and a gourmet kitchen would make your life more enjoyable, it is a great choice!
