A few weeks back, we explored some of the great aspects of living in Sarasota proper. One of the best features of this area, we learned, is our pristine, white sand beaches and amazing Caribbean blue waters. Boating, fishing, kayaking and all types of water sports are available on any one of Sarasota’s gorgeous barrier Keys. The “Grand Dame” of our offshore islands is Longboat Key, which boasts 16 square miles of geography – although nearly 3/4 of that is water.
Lindahl Construction has been building quality custom homes on Longboat Key for decades, and it is our pleasure to introduce you to this amazing tropical oasis. We are confident that once you see it, you’ll want to make it home.
Longboat Key will celebrate 65 years of incorporation in 2020. The Key is connected to Lido and St. Armand’s Keys to the south, and Anna Maria Island to the north. Approximately half of the island is located in Sarasota County, with the other half falling over the Manatee County Line. Both downtown Sarasota and downtown Bradenton are easily accessible from Longboat Key.
The Key exhibits more of a country club lifestyle than its’ neighbors to the south (Siesta and Lido Key) which tend to be a bit more tourist driven. By contrast, Longboat Key’s properties typically have longer minimum rentals, some as long as 4-6 months, which nearly eliminates the tourist trade and tends to attract seasonal and snowbird type clientele.
Did You Know? “Snowbird” is a local term for a part-time resident who typically spends winters in Florida and the rest of the year “up north”. Many snowbirds own permanent residences, while others look for properties to rent for 4-6 months per season. Often, homeowners and property owners make substantial income by renting their residence during this time.
Longboat Key offers amazing boating, golf courses, and tennis clubs. The Longboat Key Club is considered one of the most prestigious clubs in the area, and also has reciprocal arrangements with other mainland country clubs. Dining ranges from casual to elegant. The Dry Dock Grill and Mar-Vista offer amazing waterfront views and food to match; Euphemia Haye and Maison Blanche are area favorites as well. List of top Longboat Key Restaurants.
Longboat Key is also known for the Longboat Key Education Center, a non-profit adult enrichment center. While lounging at the beach or exploring the mangroves by boat is a great way to spend the day, residents and snowbirds may enjoy learning new things, through a wide range of education and recreation classes offered by the Center. You can choose from over 150 courses, from yoga to foreign affairs. There is no pre-requisite for any course, and offerings also include a lecture series, performing-arts series, one-day workshops and guided day-long trips.
Of course, our gleaming white sand beaches are always a prime reason for moving to Longboat Key. Unlike other areas, however, there are few public beaches on Longboat Key; instead, the beaches are reserved for residents and guests of the properties on the island. For boaters, a very popular neighborhood is Country Club Shores, which offers rows and rows of deep water canals with direct deep water access. While many of these homes are now 5o years old or more, this is a prime area for newcomers to buy the old home and use the lot to build their new custom home.
