So, you are one of the lucky people who has the opportunity to live on a waterfront lot in Sarasota or Longboat Key. Whether you purchased a current home, or managed one of the very few vacant lots still available in this area, you know you have obtained something very special. From enjoying sunsets over the Gulf to watching herons on Philippi Creek, there are hundreds of ways to take advantage of your special view.
Many residences simply have a wall of windows, and a wide open view. But if you are looking for more than a view from your living room, we have a few ideas on how to best live the life you have on the water.
- Build Up: Some people have a waterfront lot but the view is obscured by trees, or even by the adjacent properties and fences. If you want to make the most of your privileged location, explore ways to build up. This could be a second story loft, or a rooftop patio. You may wish to build a deck off your second story master bedroom, or perhaps add an observation platform. Whatever your choice, be sure to check the local statutes before building, and be sure to hire a licensed and insured contractor to help.
- Build a Dock: You may think that a dock is only applicable to those with boats, but a dock can be a great addition for anyone who wants a front-seat view to the wildlife, birds and beauty that our waterways offer. Get creative! Build comfortable seating, add a chimenea, or even construct a roof for some shade. Don’t forget a small shed or for rods and reels, sunscreen, and towels! Again, be sure to check the local statutes.
- Gazebo Gazing: Pick a high spot on your property, or a place with the perfect view, then build a gazebo to relax in and retreat to. Gazebos provide the shade and seating you need, while affording all of the outdoor ambiance you require. Put a firepit in the middle, and drape the roof with vines and flowers. You’ll love your outdoor oasis to enjoy your waterfront views.
- Walk it Out: Create pathways from your home down to the waters edge, but don’t think you have to provide a straight line. Design meandering flagstone paths, benches and landscaping, and outdoor illumination for the evenings. Imagine ending up at a shady alcove right down by the water, protected from the elements. Add fountains, bird baths, koi ponds…use your imagination! Your entire backyard will be a tropical oasis with views in every direction.
- Be Neighborly: If you live on a body of water traversed by other people in boats, canoes or kayaks, be a good neighbor! Post whimsical signs, welcoming messages, or directional signs pointing them in the right direction. You may even wish to play mood music to entertain as they drift past. Of course, sitting out on your dock and waving is a great way to enjoy the waterfront lot lifestyle you were craving.
Whatever you do, be sure to enlist the help of a local general contractor. Not only can they help with the required permits, but they will ensure that any needed electricity or plumbing is also installed correctly and safely. At Lindahl Construction, we build beautiful waterfront homes – but we also love helping people to renovate those homes in creative and personal ways. If you have ideas, bring them to us! We’ll bring them to life.
